Why So Many Families Are Walking Away from Grocery Store Chicken

A customer said something to me this week that struck me.

She told me,
“You’re just a wealth of information. I love talking to you.”

And I thought… yeah, that’s why I love my job.

I’m not just raising food.  I’m helping people understand it.

Because a lot of folks feel the same way she does…

They’re confused and unsure about the chicken they see at the store, and are quietly wondering:

“What am I really feeding my family?”

So let’s sit down for a minute and talk…

What Most People Don’t Realize About Store-Bought Chicken

When you pick up a package of chicken at the grocery store, there's a whole lot more there than what you're seeing.

The reality is… it’s been through a sadder journey than most people imagine.

At Tyson's large facilities, chickens are processed at extremely high speeds—on average, more than 100,000 a day.

That kind of speed comes with tradeoffs.

To keep up, those systems rely on chemical rinses and baths to reduce bacteria like Salmonella... And that's just one among many.

This isn't speculation—it’s standard industry practice.

The USDA allows up to 50 parts per million (ppm) of chlorine in water used to chill the birds after slaughter.

To give you a simple picture:

  • A swimming pool is usually around 1–3 ppm
  • These tanks can be 5 to 50 times stronger

Yep, it's soaked in bleach.

Even with those steps, government data shows that some chicken still carries bacteria when it leaves the plant.

And it’s considered acceptable—as long as it stays within certain limits.

What You’re Not Told on the Label

What’s hard for folks is this:

You won’t see any of that on the package.

The won't tell you:

  • how it was processed
  • what it was washed with
  • or how it lived before it got there

Instead, you'll see words like “fresh,” "no antibiotics or hormones," or “all natural."

Without any doubt, those words don’t tell the whole story.

And Then There’s the Water

There’s another piece most people don’t realize.

A significant portion of conventional chicken is “enhanced” with a solution of:

  • water
  • salt
  • phosphates

This can add up to 15 - 20% more weight. So when it cooks…

A lot of that liquid comes out in the pan.

Which means: You paid for water… not just chicken.

And that’s why it tastes:

  • rubbery
  • bland
  • and just… off

Customers tell me this ALL the time,
"Your chicken is the best we've ever had!"

I think the fact that it's actually chicken might have something to do with that. Just sayin.

Why This Matters (Especially to You)

If you’re someone who:

  • cares about what you feed your family
  • believes animals should be handled with respect
  • wants to buy from local farms "right down the road"
  • and wants to trust the person raising it

Then this matters.

How We Do It Differently Here

Here on our farm, we’ve made a very different choice.

We process our whole chickens right here on the farm.

  • In the open air
  • At a human pace
  • One bird at a time

Evisceration is done by hand, not by machine.

That means:

  • we can see what we’re doing
  • we can take our time
  • and we can keep things clean without relying on chemical shortcuts

It’s slower. But it honors the bird and yields amazingly flavorful meat.

A Simpler Way to Think About It

At the end of the day, it comes down to this:

Do you want your food handled by a system… Or by a person you know?

My main purpose today is not to scare you away from the grocery store.

I just think you deserve to understand what you’re buying.

And if you’ve been feeling that quiet hesitation…

You’re not alone.
